Anglo American Develops Entrepreneurs in Chile

In 2008, the mining company Anglo American decided to leverage its two decades of experience running enterprise development programs in South Africa to launch a similar initiative in Chile. The resulting Emerge Program aims to drive the growth of local economies by supporting micro and small businesses through coaching, training, and access to credit.

The Emerge Program has two divisions. The first, called Emerge Micro-enterprises, is a collaboration with Fondo Esperanza (Hope Fund), a microfinance institution focused on lending to women. The second division, Emerge Promoting Businesses, offers training, mentoring, and access to credit in partnership with TechnoServe and the Universidad de Chile. Anglo American’s Emerge Program has helped more than 50,000 micro and small businesses in Chile to date.
